ADHD: Return Visits Are Key

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral disorder that affects up to 7 percent of school-age children, according to the CDC. Symptoms commonly include inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.

Consult a doctor if you suspect your child has ADHD. If medication is prescribed, it is important to return for follow-up visits to be sure the treatment is working properly. It is recommended that children on an ADHD prescription return to their prescribing physician:
  • At least once within 30 days of starting the medication, and
  • At least two more times between four weeks and nine months.
To help you understand your child’s ADHD, CDPHP has developed a toolkit that includes an appointment tracker and an informational brochure. To download the ADHD toolkit, click here. You may also call the CDPHP member services department at the number on your member ID card to request a hard copy.
